The IRS processed more than 271 million tax returns in 2023. That’s a lot of returns. Sometimes those returns get processed right away and other times it takes a while.
The IRS has a section on its website where you can check the status of your tax return and see if there is a balance due on your account. This is true for individual or business tax returns. In order to do this, you first need to create an online account. The IRS uses ID.me to set up taxpayer accounts. To create an ID.me account you will need to first verify your identity. This can be done by taking a photo with your government ID or setting up a video chat where an agent can verify you.
Once you have set up your IRS online account you can:
- See if you owe tax
- Check your payment history
- View your adjustment gross income (AGI)
- Look at other tax records
How Long Does it Take the IRS to Process Your Tax Return?
It is highly recommended that you e-file your tax returns whenever possible. It’s faster and you will likely receive your refund sooner than if you filed a paper return. (By paper returns we mean tax returns that are printed out and then mailed.) E-filed returns are generally processed within 21 days. A refund can be expected anywhere from 6-8 weeks when the tax return is mailed in. You can also receive your refund sooner if you choose direct deposit rather than physical check.
Checking the Status of Your Refund
Tax refunds may be delayed for a variety of reasons. This includes, but is not limited to, errors on your tax return or missing documents.
The IRS now offers the Where’s My Refund tool on its website where you can view the status of your refund. The system updates daily but in order to use it you will need your:
- Social Security number or ITIN
- Filing Status
- Expected Refund
If you get a message that your return is being processed that’s a good sign. This means that the IRS received your tax return and is working on it. You may see a ‘Refund Approved’ message informing you that the refund has been authorized and also the date payment will be sent to you.
TIP: You may also check the status of your refund with the IRS2Go mobile app.
